Video/ UN chief congratulates all Beijing 2022 Olympians and Paralympians

The United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres sent his congratulations to the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics via the video message to highlight the Olympic spirit featuring peace, mutual respect, and understanding, which kicked off in Beijing on Friday evening.

Guterres hoped that it would go beyond the Olympics to remind everyone that "we belong to the same human family."

In a pre-recorded message to the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics, Guterres congratulated the Olympians and Paralympians participating in the Games, praising them for "embodying" the Olympic spirit and "inspire us all."

"Ni hao Beijing! Hello Beijing! Congratulations to every Olympian and Paralympian participating in the 2022 Winter Games. The Olympic spirit is one of peace, mutual respect, and understanding. The young competitors embody these qualities and inspire us all. It is my fervent hope that this spirit goes far beyond these Olympics, to remind everyone - participants and viewers - that we belong to the same human family. There is no limit to what we can achieve when we work together -- for peace, for human rights, and for healthy lives and wellbeing for everyone. Let the Olympic spirit of fair play and solidarity shine throughout the Games and beyond. Xiexie! Thank you!" said Guterres.

Guterres attended the opening ceremony of the Beijing 2022 with other heads of international organizations.
